The Mask You Live In Screening

The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. A screening on April 25, 2019, is open to the community and will be followed by a panel and discussion. Suggested viewing age is 13+. Tickets will also be available at the door. Doors open at 6:30pm and will be shown Main Hall A and B.

Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, the documentary’s protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

The evening is hosted by Bay Area New Thought Evolving and Rising (https://www.banteronline.org/).

A 2015 Sundance Film Festival Premiere, The Mask You Live In is written, directed, and producedby Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Find out more at www.themaskyoulivein.org.
